I’ve seen snow three times in my life. The first time, it was in Houston, right before Christmas of 2004. I don’t really count it, though, because of how light it was. Little flurries here and there – enough to make us cold but not enough to build a snowman.
When I moved out here, Joshua said there might be snow. He got snow in Loganville, GA but where we’re at is further South so it wasn’t guaranteed. I just wanted snow for winter! Then, last year, we got snow when Noah was a week old. I bundled him up in a jacket, threw my poncho over us and we went outside…beautiful. Still pretty light but enough to enjoy snow and to say that I had seen it.
Then there was yesterday. Yesterday was real. There were inches and inches of snow on the ground (You people with 3 feet of snow – bite me; I’m from Houston.) and snow was falling down on my jacket, my hair…all around me, snowflakes were dancing in the air. Noah was intrigued by all of the cold stuff that kept drifting down on his hands and he wanted to be in daddy’s arms the entire time – probably because he’s warmer than I am. I wasn’t offended…that meant pictures!
I have never understood what people meant by snow crunching beneath their feet. It’s soft, fluffy stuff, right? I mean, I could scoop it up and turn it into a snowball (many were thrown yesterday) before my hands screamed for respite…very unlike ice, which we’re used to. But, now I do. I walked on the soft snow and it crunched beneath my feet. It was, somehow, very satisfying. A lovely farewell to winter, because it is now time for Spring to come roaring in, my second favorite season with blossoming flowers and green grass and, oh yeah, pollen. I forgot about the pollen.
Whatever, we had snow and it was fun. So fun. I wouldn’t want it all winter – I’m a pansy, really – but I definitely like having snow.
It’s just so beautiful. What a way to start off the month.
